Weight Loss and Exercise

Weight Loss and Exercise – What Exercises Are The Best?

Weight loss and exercise. Yes, these share a positive relationship but exercise helps you to lose your love handles in more ways than one. Exercises can be divided into aerobic and anaerobic exercises. I shall expound on both so that you can be enlightened so that you can make informed choices on which exercises to embark to best aid your weight loss.

What are aerobic exercises? The latter hinges on you breaking into a sweat as you work at moderate intensity over a period of half to one hour. This works your heart and lungs, taking in more oxygen for you to cope with the exercise. The energy expended will come from your body fat and the fat burning process will continue a few hours after your workout. Thus, to some it up, weight loss and exercise is true because aerobic exercises burn fat directly. Suitable exercises are jogging, swimming or singles tennis. Team sports are not very ideal aerobic exercises since you inadvertently get periods of rest, allowing your heart rate to drop.

Using Exercise to Overcome Obesity

Exercise is an important part of overcoming obesity. There are many ways to exercise. It is important to start small and gradually increase intensity so as not to injure yourself.

First, you have to decide if you want to focus on cardio or strength training. Because of its focus on fat burning, those who are obese are often encouraged to focus on cardio initially. Cardio workouts raise the heart rate so that the body is able to burn fat efficiently. Strength training focuses on building muscle, which increases the amount of fat burn while you are resting. Because they complement each other, most exercise programs incorporate both strength training and cardio.

Because a trip to the gym can be intimidating, many choose to exercise from the comfort of their own home. You can use equipment as simple as milk jug or soup cans for weight to an in-home gym that can often be purchased for a reasonable price. A recumbent bike is a good investment when beginning a workout regimen because it is gentle on the knee joints. An exercise ball is also a good investment. The ball can be used to increase balance, stability, and abdominal strength. After becoming comfortable with the exercise ball, you can move on to more advanced moves that provide a total body workout.

Is Obesity Contagious

It seems absurd to believe that obesity is contagious. After all, haven’t we been told that obesity is the result of poor food choices and lack of exercise? How in the world could obesity be contagious?

There are some researchers who believe that human adenovirus is partly responsible for the obesity epidemic. The theory that a virus could cause obesity began when a scientist noticed that chickens infected with an avian adenovirus were fatter than those chickens that were not infected. This was most interesting because some who were studying the human obesity explosion were becoming suspicious that more than poor diet and lack of exercise were causing humans to gain girth. The human adenovirus AD-36 has been found in obese humans. Studies with animals show that while not all human adenoviruses cause obesity in animals, there are several that do.

The Difference Between Obesity and Being Overweight

The obesity rate in America is rising. With so much talk about this epidemic, many are confused about the difference between being obese and being overweight. Is it the better to be overweight or obese? Is there really a difference? Although both can have adverse effects on health, there is a difference between being overweight and being obese.

The difference lies in just how much extra weight you are caring around. This is most easily measured by calculating your body mass index. The body mass index is a calculation that involves dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters) squared. A person who is has a body mass index between 25 and 29.9 is categorized as overweight. Obesity is classified as a BMI of 30 and above. This means that a person is more than 20 percent above their normal weight. Morbid obesity is a body mass index of over 40 or being 50% to 100% above normal weight.

It is important to note that a person with a high body index may not necessarily be overweight or obese. An athlete or bodybuilder will have a high BMI because of a high percentage of muscle mass as opposed to a high percentage of fat, which an elevated BMI traditionally indicates.

There are several possible causes that lead to being overweight or obese. Usually weight sneaks up on you while you’re trying to take care of a family or deal with the latest life crises. A combination of poor food choices along with an absence of physical activity contributes to weight gain. Other factors that contribute to obesity are age, gender, genetics, medication, emotional issues, and medication.

A person has to be overweight before they become obese. If you are overweight, it is important to take steps now to gain control of your weight so that you do not become obese. It will be easier to get those 30 pounds off now than it will be to get off 60 pounds a year from now. For an obese person, getting to overweight status is a good thing. It is a step in the right direction and can be a motivation to keep up the hard work to get back down to a healthy weight. Often losing the weight involves a lifestyle change that is easier to plan than it is to put into action. It is hard work, but the results are well worth the effort.

Obesity Opens the Door to Other Diseases

Obesity is a disease. Yet, its true danger lies in the health risks that have become associated with obesity. These include heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea, and some forms of cancer. The stress of carrying around extra weight results in these adverse effects on the body that could be avoided or sometimes corrected with diet and exercise to eliminate obesity as an aggravating factor.

Obesity can lead to sudden death from heart disease and stroke. This is because of putting extra stress on the heart to do its job efficiently. An overworked heart manifests itself through an increase in blood pressure and angina. It is not unusual for someone who is obese to battle high blood pressure and increased cholesterol levels. These are warning signals that you are not healthy. Fortunately, a weight loss of as little as 10% of body weight can decrease the probability of developing heart disease by allowing the heart to pump more efficiently. This weight loss can also lower blood pressure and cholesterol blood levels.

The human adenovirus AD-36 has been found in obese humans. Studies with animals show that while not all human adenoviruses cause obesity in animals, there are several that do.

There also seems to be yet another risk factor for obesity. Research has shown that obesity can be socially contagious. It seems that if you spend too much time with others who are obese, your chances of becoming obese rises. This means that your family and friends can make you fat simply by association. Supposedly, your risk of obesity increases 57% if you have a friend who becomes obese. If it is a sibling that is obese, the risk increases by 40%. Chances of becoming obese increase to 37% if your spouse becomes obese. The study found that risk was higher for same gender friends or family than for opposite gender friends and family. If this study is valid, the good news is that it works the same way for weight loss. When friends or family begin losing weight, it motivates you to lose weight also.

Whether either of these studies is valid is unknown. However, just to be safe, it might be a good idea to add hand washing to the list of ways to prevent obesity. Being mindful of the potential to gain weight as your friends and family gain weight might also serve as a protection in avoiding obesity. Since much of the data from both studies viewed as purely speculation, it is not known with any certainty that obesity is contagious.

Liquid Weight Loss Diets

A Necessary Evil?

In this superficial age where thin is in, there are multifarious liquid weight loss diets that you can find. Here are some popular low- calorie, low-fat ones which I suggest you only use in times of emergency. Having to fit into your wedding gown in one week is probably the only reason I will accept.

The Cabbage Soup diet lasts for one week. The name is pretty self-explanatory. You can have all the soup you want till you thoroughly abhor it. There are no restrictions on vegetables, fruits (except bananas. However, Day Four is the day you eat not less than eight bananas so you can get sick of it. Sadistic huh?) and non-sweetened fluids. However, there is a very limited set of strictly- stipulated foods for everyday of the week. This maybe a healthy alternative to a week of junk but it may backfire when you swear never to touch vegetable or its soups in your life after this.

If you are one who must have some solid food to sustain you, steer clear of this weight loss plan. This is an extremist liquid weight loss diet as it allows no food at all for 10 days! Yucks! Its formula: an eclectic blend of spring water, lemon juice, organic maple syrup and cayenne pepper. You take this about 10 times a day, along with 1 glass each of laxative tea and salt water. This formula is actually meant as a detoxification regime but people use it as a diet too. This is absolutely crazy and the logic behing this diet goes against common sense. If you are as insane as to want to take up this programme, I suggest you book a flight to Africa. You wil not be alone when you starve to death.

The Grapefruit diet is a 12-day liquid weight loss diet. You get to have your fill of black coffee, vegetables and meat as long as you have grapefruit or its juice to go with your three meals. It is also compulsory to have eggs and bacon every morning! Though this seems the most sustainable of all diets, be warned, as studies have found that excess consumption of the fruit may increase the risk of breast cancer. Second, having so much butter, bacon and eggs everyday may defeat your purpose of dieting since you might die of high cholesterol or clogged arteries instead. I also do not understand the logic of some of its ‘rules’. First, you can eat all the meat ‘till you are stuffed’ Second, you can have all the butter you want and even have your vegetables with them. I do not think it is unnecessary to explain why I find these ridiculous. It seems like its creators were woozy in the head from dieting when they came up with this regime.

Overall, I am personally quite appalled at the multifarious liquid weight loss diets.
Common sense tells me that they are just never going to work if you are looking for a sustainable and healthy weight loss regime. One simply cannot get even half the required nutrients on a liquid diet. A personal take. Stay away from such crap. Period.
