Psychosocial Aspects of Acne

Posted by: beautystyles on: November 29, 2007

For teenagers, the psychological and social aspects of acne can be staggering. Even adults can carry a large burden of self-criticism because of the condition. If you have acne, it may make you feel awkward and out-of-place.

The degree of psychological stress you might feel because of your acne can vary depending on your nature. Some people have severe acne on many parts of their bodies. Yet they do not feel self-conscious about it.

Something about their emotional make-up keeps them from being affected. This is amazing, since many people will not leave you alone about acne. If you have a bad case of acne, they cannot seem to help themselves; they have to say something.

Yet, others can be extremely upset because of a minor pimple or two. This happens especially when a teenager or adult has an important function to go to. They want to look their best. They feel that the pimple will undermine that. They think that all anyone will see is their pimple. It may be so upsetting to them that they simply stay home.

This sets up the social isolation that is often a part of having acne. If you have acne, you are less likely to be outgoing. You may even become virtually housebound except for school or work.

However, it is not just that you do not feel like interacting with others. Some of them will not reach out to you. They may feel that you want to be left alone. If you have acne, you must often go the extra mile to succeed socially.

It is difficult to put forth an effort when your self-esteem is at a low point. If you have acne, especially if it seems severe to you, you may feel embarrassed about it. You may feel that you are not good enough.

People who preach on old-fashioned notions of what causes acne may prompt you to feel guilty. You may feel that you are doing the wrong thing or eating the wrong thing. You may feel dirty and unwanted. Such feelings can lead to anger.

Acne can make you feel a certain amount of anxiety. You may worry that you will get a breakout at the worst possible moment. You may worry that your boyfriend or girlfriend will abandon you because of your acne. You may find many things to worry about.

Finally, acne can cause depression. When your self-esteem drops and you no longer feel like joining in activities with others, you are becoming depressed. Some people have been known to attempt suicide because they feel so helpless with their acne.

If you have any of these psychological or social problems, it makes sense to devise an acne strategy for dealing with them. One way to cope is to do some mirror work. Look into your eyes in the mirror. You will not be able to see your acne no matter what you do. You can also step back and notice that you see all of yourself and not just the acne.

If you have a good support system, it helps to talk. Do not let social isolation creep up on you. Learn the signs of depression. If you believe that you have any of them, do not hesitate to seek professional help.
